When I first heard the song ‘Wait For It’ from the musical Hamilton by Lin Manuel Miranda, my reaction was “wow.”
There is such power in the performance and the lyrics really hit me hard. There is one line that goes “I am the one thing in life I can control.” That really got to me because I’ve always felt like I can’t.
I can’t control when I get sick, that’s my biggest concern, it always has been. Then I realised that getting sick has nothing to do with me. That’s why I can’t control it. What I can control is how much sleep I get, how much I eat, how I take care of my health.
I will get sick, I will have more surgery, I will be given more medication and treatment and I can’t control that but I can control me. I can control in what state of mind I face these challenges and I will face them strong.
I have seen death several times. People I care about, people with similar diagnoses as me, older and younger have passed away. I’m still here and there must be a reason for that. So I’m going to stay strong and keep my head up high.
